Overview

ABVE-PC is a chemotherapy combination regimen used primarily for treating Hodgkin lymphoma in children. This regimen consists of six different drugs that work together to target cancer cells through various mechanisms. The name ABVE-PC is an acronym where each letter represents one of the drugs in the combination: - A = Doxorubicin Hydrochloride (Adriamycin) - B = Bleomycin - V = Vincristine Sulfate - E = Etoposide Phosphate - P = Prednisone - C = Cyclophosphamide This regimen was developed in 1997 as a dose-dense chemotherapy approach with the goal of enhancing treatment efficacy while reducing long-term toxicity risks[4]. It was specifically designed to improve upon the ABVD regimen by substituting vincristine for vinblastine to reduce myelotoxicity, and etoposide for dacarbazine to avoid therapy delays, while adding prednisone and cyclophosphamide to enhance efficacy[4]. ABVE-PC is primarily used to treat intermediate-risk and high-risk Hodgkin lymphoma in pediatric patients[1][2][4]. Clinical studies have shown that this regimen is well-tolerated by children with acceptable toxicity levels and offers high rates of complete response with low risk of relapse[2][4]. The regimen is typically administered every 21 days, with the number of cycles determined by the patient's response to treatment[4]. In some treatment protocols, rapid early responders may receive fewer cycles followed by radiation therapy, while slow early responders might receive additional cycles[4]. Each drug in this combination is FDA-approved to treat cancer or cancer-related conditions, and they work together more effectively than single drugs because they kill cancer cells through different mechanisms[1].
