Overview

ABX203 is a therapeutic vaccine developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It is composed of two recombinant proteins from HBV—the surface antigen (HBsAg) and the nucleocapsid (core) antigen (HBcAg). The vaccine is designed to induce both neutralizing antibodies against HBsAg and strong cellular immune responses, mimicking those seen in patients who naturally clear acute HBV infection. ABX203 has been formulated for administration as a nasal spray or subcutaneous injection. Clinical trials have shown that it can sustain viral load suppression for at least six months after cessation of therapy, potentially offering advantages over standard treatments such as nucleos(t)ide analogues and pegylated interferon alpha[5][4][1]. The drug was originally developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Cuba, with further development and commercialization rights licensed to Abivax.
