Overview

ABX203 (also known as Nasvac) is a therapeutic vaccine developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). It consists of a 1:1 combination of two recombinant proteins: the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and the Hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg). The vaccine is designed to break immune tolerance in CHB patients by stimulating both systemic and mucosal immune responses, particularly cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) activity. In clinical development, ABX203 was evaluated in combination with standard-of-care nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs), which are oral antivirals that inhibit HBV DNA polymerase. The goal of this combination therapy was to achieve a functional cure, characterized by sustained HBsAg loss and undetectable HBV DNA after the cessation of NA therapy. While Abivax discontinued its development program in 2016 after a Phase 2b trial failed to meet its primary endpoint, the vaccine continues to be produced and used in certain regions under the name Nasvac.
