AC-25793 is a small molecule, selective muscarinic M1 receptor agonist developed by Acadia Pharmaceuticals. It was primarily investigated for the treatment of cognitive deficits and psychosis associated with Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. By selectively targeting the M1 receptor subtype, which is densely located in the hippocampus and cortex, the compound aims to enhance cholinergic neurotransmission to improve memory and cognitive function while minimizing side effects associated with the activation of other muscarinic subtypes (M2-M5). Although it showed promise in preclinical models, its clinical development was eventually discontinued in favor of other candidates in Acadia's pipeline.
