Overview

Acacia catechu is a deciduous tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, indigenous to India, other Asian countries, and East Africa. The extract from its heartwood and bark contains various bioactive compounds including flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins that contribute to its medicinal properties. It possesses antimicrobial, antidiarrheal, antinociceptive, antihyperlipidemic, antiulcer, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antiproliferative, hemolytic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The plant contains chemicals that might reduce swelling and pain, and may have antiviral and antibacterial effects. It has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for treating various conditions including asthma, bronchitis, cough, diarrhea, skin diseases, and wounds.
