Overview

Acacia catechu seed extract is a botanical extract derived from the seeds of the *Acacia catechu* Willd. tree (family Fabaceae), commonly known as black cutch or catechu. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, the extract contains bioactive phytochemicals such as epicatechin, rutin, quercetin, and catechin. Preclinical studies have demonstrated its cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic activity against various cancer cell lines, including human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and oral squamous carcinoma (SCC-25). The extract's mechanism of action involves the induction of oxidative stress via reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the subsequent activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, characterized by the upregulation of Bax, cytochrome c, and caspases-3 and 9, and the downregulation of Bcl-2. Additionally, it exhibits hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial properties.
