Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Acacia nilotica extract is a botanical extract derived from the *Acacia nilotica* tree (also known as *Vachellia nilotica*, babul, or kikar). It is rich in bioactive phytochemicals, including polyphenols, condensed tannins, phlobatannins, alkaloids, and flavonoids. The extract is traditionally used in ethnomedicine and is being pharmacologically evaluated for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. In preclinical models, it has demonstrated protective effects against ovalbumin-induced allergic asthma by reducing airway inflammation, mucus overproduction, and cytokine dysregulation (such as IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, and IL-17A). Clinical trials have also investigated its efficacy as a mouthrinse to improve postoperative wound healing and reduce complications like alveolar osteitis following third molar surgery, as well as in the syndromic management of abnormal vaginal discharge.
