Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Acai Juice Product is a nutraceutical intervention derived from the acai berry (*Euterpe oleracea*), a fruit from a Brazilian palm tree. Developed and studied by the University of Colorado, Denver, it was specifically evaluated for the treatment of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic prostate cancer patients with biochemical recurrence (rising PSA levels). The product is rich in phytochemicals, particularly antioxidants such as anthocyanins and bioflavonoids. Its biological mechanism is attributed to its antioxidant properties and potential pro-apoptotic and antiproliferative effects against cancer cells. In a Phase II clinical trial (NCT01521949), the juice was administered orally (2 ounces twice daily) to assess its impact on PSA doubling time and disease stabilization. While the trial did not meet its primary endpoint of a 50% PSA response, disease stabilization effects were observed in a majority of participants.
