ACAM-FLU-A is a genetically engineered, recombinant subunit vaccine designed as a “universal” influenza A vaccine. It targets the M2e peptide, a highly conserved extracellular domain of the M2 ion channel present across all influenza A strains. The vaccine is constructed by presenting the M2e peptide on a hepatitis B core protein carrier to enhance immune response. This approach aims to induce broad, strain-independent immunity against influenza A viruses, including those responsible for pandemic influenza. ACAM-FLU-A demonstrated promising safety and immunogenicity in phase 1 clinical studies and provided protection in preclinical (ferret) challenge studies against highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza. Its design intends to address the limitations of seasonal flu vaccines that require frequent reformulation due to antigenic drift[1][2][7].
