Overview
*Acanthus ebracteatus*, commonly known as Holly Mangrove, is a medicinal mangrove species native to Southeast Asia and widely used in Thai traditional medicine. It is primarily utilized for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, wound healing, and as a neuroprotective agent. The therapeutic activity is attributed to various phytochemicals, including verbascoside (acteoside) and benzoxazolinone-type alkaloids. Research has demonstrated that extracts of *Acanthus ebracteatus* possess significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. In clinical and preclinical studies, it has been investigated as a topical treatment for atopic dermatitis, a component of combination therapies for acne vulgaris, and a potential treatment for androgenic alopecia due to its ability to inhibit 5-alpha reductase and promote dermal papilla cell proliferation.
