Acarbose + metformin is a fixed-dose combination oral medication used primarily for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. This combination leverages two complementary mechanisms of action to improve glycemic control. Acarbose acts as an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, delaying the breakdown and absorption of complex carbohydrates in the intestine, thereby reducing postprandial blood glucose spikes. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, reduces intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral uptake and utilization of glucose.
