acarbose placebo

Acarbose placebo is the pharmacologically inactive control substance used in a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT02344108) conducted by The Catholic University of Korea. The study was designed as a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of adding acarbose to a background therapy of metformin and sitagliptin in Korean patients with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus. The placebo was formulated to match the appearance and administration schedule of acarbose tablets (titrated from 50 mg twice daily to 100 mg three times daily) to ensure the integrity of the blinding. Results from the study indicated that the addition of acarbose significantly improved glycemic control compared to the placebo group, with a mean HbA1c reduction of 0.44% over 16 weeks.
