ACAT-1 shRNA is a short hairpin RNA designed to silence the expression of the ACAT-1 (acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase 1) gene, also known as SOAT1. ACAT-1 is an enzyme responsible for the esterification of free cholesterol into cholesteryl esters, which are then stored in lipid droplets. In various cancers, including ovarian and endometrial cancer, ACAT-1 expression is often elevated, leading to increased cholesterol ester accumulation which may support tumor progression, migration, and invasion. By utilizing shRNA-mediated knockdown, researchers can investigate the therapeutic potential of inhibiting cholesterol metabolism as a strategy to suppress tumorigenesis and metastasis.
