Overview

Acebrophylline is a small molecule drug used primarily for the treatment and prevention of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is a combination of ambroxol (a mucolytic agent) and theophylline-7-acetic acid (a xanthine derivative bronchodilator). The drug acts by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, reducing airway inflammation, and thinning mucus to facilitate its clearance from the respiratory tract. Mechanistically, acebrophylline inhibits phosphodiesterase enzymes, leading to increased cyclic AMP levels that promote bronchodilation. It also inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-alpha and leukotrienes, reduces mucus viscosity by enhancing surfactant production via ambroxol activity, and improves mucociliary clearance. These combined actions help reduce airway obstruction in chronic respiratory diseases[1][2][5][6][8].
