Acefer-F is an oral anti-anemic combination therapy developed by Saffron Pharmaceuticals, consisting of Iron(III)-hydroxide polymaltose complex (100 mg) and folic acid (0.35 mg). The iron component is a non-ionic complex where iron(III) is polynuclear-hydroxide-embedded within a polymaltose shell, a structure that mimics the physiological iron storage protein ferritin. This design facilitates active iron uptake via a controlled mechanism in the gastrointestinal tract, minimizing the release of free ionic iron and thereby reducing common side effects such as gastric irritation and oxidative stress. Folic acid, a member of the B-vitamin group, serves as an essential coenzyme in the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and is critical for nucleoprotein synthesis and the maintenance of normal erythropoiesis. Acefer-F is indicated for the treatment of latent and manifest iron deficiency and the prevention of iron and folic acid deficiencies during pregnancy and lactation.
