Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Acefylline piperazine (also known as acepifylline) is a xanthine derivative and a salt of acefylline and piperazine. It acts as a bronchodilator, cardiac stimulant, and mild diuretic. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE) enzymes, which increases intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels, and the antagonism of adenosine receptors, leading to the relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Developed historically by Laboratoires Delalande (now part of Sanofi) and marketed under brand names such as Etaphylline and Acefyl, it is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of respiratory disorders associated with bronchospasm, including asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Compared to theophylline, acefylline piperazine is reported to have lower toxicity and cause less gastric irritation.
