Overview

Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is a human-derived allograft material used in periodontal and plastic surgery to treat soft tissue defects such as gingival recession. It is produced by processing donor skin to remove all cellular components while maintaining the structural integrity of the extracellular matrix, including the basement membrane and vascular channels. This scaffold allows for host cell repopulation and revascularization at the surgical site. In clinical studies at Tufts University (such as NCT03057730), ADM is utilized in combination with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) to treat gingival recession, providing an alternative to autogenous connective tissue grafts and eliminating the need for a secondary donor site. The material is specifically evaluated for its efficacy in patients with thin versus thick periodontal biotypes.
