Overview

The acellular pertussis vaccine is an inactivated subunit vaccine designed to protect against whooping cough (pertussis), caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Unlike whole-cell vaccines that use killed bacteria, the acellular version contains purified components of the bacterium—typically three to five proteins such as inactivated pertussis toxin (PT), filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), fimbrial antigens (Fim2 and Fim3), and pertactin. These antigens stimulate an immune response without exposing recipients to the full range of side effects seen with whole-cell vaccines. The mechanism of action involves inducing immunity by generating antibodies against these key virulence factors of B. pertussis. Acellular formulations are almost always given in combination with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids as part of DTaP or Tdap vaccines for children and adults[1][4][5]. The primary indication is prevention of whooping cough; it is also used in combination products for broader immunization schedules.
