Acellular pertussis vaccine adsorbed is a vaccine component designed to provide active immunity against *Bordetella pertussis*, the bacterium responsible for whooping cough. Unlike whole-cell pertussis vaccines, which contain inactivated entire bacteria, acellular formulations consist of highly purified bacterial proteins. These typically include pertussis toxoid (PT), filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), pertactin (PRN), and fimbriae (FIM) types 2 and 3. These antigens are adsorbed onto an aluminum salt adjuvant (such as aluminum hydroxide or aluminum phosphate) to enhance the host's immune response. Acellular pertussis vaccines were developed to offer a safer profile with fewer local and systemic adverse reactions compared to whole-cell vaccines. In most clinical settings, this component is not administered as a monovalent product but is a key constituent of multivalent combination vaccines, such as DTaP (for pediatric primary series) and Tdap (for adolescent and adult booster immunization).
