Overview

Humacyte's Acellular Tissue Engineered Vessel (ATEV), marketed under the brand name SYMVESS, is a bioengineered, off-the-shelf human vascular conduit designed for vascular repair and reconstruction. The manufacturing process involves seeding human vascular smooth muscle cells onto a biodegradable polymer scaffold within a bioreactor, where the cells deposit extracellular matrix. The resulting tissue is then decellularized to remove donor cellular material, leaving a non-immunogenic, collagen-based vessel that maintains the mechanical properties of a native artery. Upon implantation, the ATEV is intended to undergo remodeling and repopulation by the recipient's own cells. It is FDA-approved for use in adults as a vascular conduit for extremity arterial injury when urgent revascularization is needed and autologous vein grafting is not feasible.
