Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Acetaminophen is an analgesic and antipyretic medication used to treat minor aches and pain and to reduce fever. It may also help treat pain from mild forms of arthritis. Unlike NSAIDs, acetaminophen lacks peripheral anti-inflammatory effects. The exact mechanism of action remains unclear, but it is thought to inhibit the cyclooxygenase (COX) pathway in the central nervous system, reducing prostaglandin synthesis. Acetaminophen may also work through the endocannabinoid system and TRPV1 receptors. It is available over-the-counter in various formulations including tablets, capsules, liquids, and suppositories.
