Overview

Acetaminophen + dextromethorphan + guaifenesin + phenylephrine is an over-the-counter (OTC) fixed-dose combination medication widely used to relieve symptoms of the common cold, influenza, and upper respiratory allergies. The combination contains four active ingredients with distinct mechanisms of action: acetaminophen, a non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic; dextromethorphan, a centrally acting cough suppressant; guaifenesin, an expectorant that thins and loosens bronchial secretions; and phenylephrine, a sympathomimetic nasal decongestant. Together, these components temporarily relieve headache, fever, minor body aches, sore throat, cough, chest congestion, and nasal or sinus congestion. It is marketed under numerous well-known brand names, including DayQuil, Mucinex, Tylenol, and Theraflu, and is available in various oral dosage forms such as tablets, caplets, softgels, and liquid solutions.
