acetanilide

Acetanilide is a small molecule organic compound that was historically the first aniline derivative used as an analgesic and antipyretic under the brand name Antifebrin. Although its systemic use has been largely superseded by its metabolite, paracetamol (acetaminophen), due to the risk of methemoglobinemia, it remains relevant in specific therapeutic contexts. Notably, it is developed and utilized by the Gansu Provincial Hospital of TCM as a topical treatment for osteofascial compartment syndrome (OCS). In this application, acetanilide is believed to alleviate local pain and inflammation, improve microcirculation, and reduce tissue pressure, thereby helping to prevent the severe ischemic complications associated with OCS. Its primary mechanism involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which reduces the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.
