Overview

Acetazolamide is a first-generation carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used to treat glaucoma (open-angle, secondary, and acute angle-closure), edema (fluid retention) caused by heart failure or other medications, certain types of epilepsy (including petit mal and unlocalized seizures), idiopathic intracranial hypertension, periodic paralysis, and to prevent or alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. It works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase in the kidneys and eyes, leading to increased urine production (diuresis) and decreased intraocular pressure. It may also be used off-label for other conditions such as Ménière’s disease and central sleep apnea[1][5][7].
