Overview

Acetoacetate is a ketone body that serves as an alternative energy substrate to glucose and acts as a signaling molecule. It is involved in various metabolic processes, including mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, and has been studied for its potential therapeutic effects in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, chronic kidney failure, colorectal cancer, and skin fibrosis. It is also utilized as a positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer, often in its 11C-labeled form (11C-Acetoacetate), to assess metabolism in organs like the heart, kidney, and brain. An orally administered form, ethyl acetoacetate (EAA), has shown efficacy in preclinical models of colorectal cancer.
