Acetochlor + dicamba is a co-formulated herbicide combination primarily utilized in agricultural settings for weed management in corn and dicamba-tolerant soybean crops. This combination leverages two distinct mechanisms of action to provide both residual and contact control of problematic vegetation. Acetochlor, a member of the chloroacetanilide class, acts as a pre-emergence herbicide by inhibiting the synthesis of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA), which prevents the emergence of annual grasses and certain small-seeded broadleaf weeds. Dicamba, a benzoic acid derivative, functions as a synthetic auxin that mimics the plant growth hormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). When applied post-emergence, dicamba causes uncontrolled and disorganized growth in susceptible broadleaf plants, leading to vascular tissue damage and eventual plant death. The integration of these two active ingredients allows for a broader spectrum of weed control and serves as a tool for managing herbicide-resistant weed populations, particularly those resistant to glyphosate or ALS inhibitors.
