Overview

Acetohydroxamic acid is a synthetic urea derivative and urease inhibitor used as an adjunct therapy for chronic urinary tract infections caused by urea-splitting bacteria. These bacteria increase ammonia levels in the urine, leading to the formation of struvite kidney stones. Acetohydroxamic acid works by reversibly inhibiting the bacterial enzyme urease, thereby reducing the hydrolysis of urea and subsequent ammonia production. This results in lower urinary pH and ammonia levels, which slows kidney stone growth and enhances the effectiveness of antibiotics against these infections. It does not have direct antibacterial activity or directly acidify urine[1][2][3][4][6][8].
