Overview

Acetophenazine is a typical antipsychotic drug of moderate potency belonging to the phenothiazine class. It is primarily used in the treatment of disorganized and psychotic thinking, including symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. The drug acts mainly as an antagonist at dopamine D2 receptor in the brain, blocking postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic D1 and D2 receptors. This action helps reduce psychotic symptoms by modulating dopaminergic neurotransmission. Acetophenazine may also depress the release of hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones and affect basal metabolism, body temperature, wakefulness, vasomotor tone, and emesis by depressing the reticular activating system[1][2][3][4][5][6].
