Overview

Acetylcysteine + isoproterenol is a combination drug administered primarily by inhalation (aerosol) for respiratory conditions characterized by thick, viscous mucus and bronchoconstriction. Acetylcysteine acts as a mucolytic agent, breaking disulfide bonds in mucoproteins to reduce mucus viscosity and facilitate its clearance from the airways. Isoproterenol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic agonist that acts as a bronchodilator by stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to airway relaxation and improved airflow. The combination has been studied for use in chronic bronchopulmonary diseases (such as chronic bronchitis), asthma, cystic fibrosis, atelectasis due to mucus obstruction, and other pulmonary conditions where both thinning of secretions and bronchodilation are beneficial[1][2][3][6][7]. Animal studies have shown no evidence of teratogenicity or impaired fertility with this combination[3][4].
