Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Acetylglycine + glutamine is a combination pharmaceutical product primarily utilized in China for its cytoprotective and metabolic support properties. The formulation consists of N-acetylglycine, a stable derivative of the amino acid glycine, and L-glutamine. In the context of pediatric cardiac surgery, such as repairs for ventricular septal defect (VSD) or tetralogy of Fallot, the combination is being investigated by institutions like Shanghai Children's Hospital to prevent and treat acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with cardiopulmonary bypass. Glutamine serves as a critical metabolic fuel and a precursor for glutathione synthesis, which helps mitigate oxidative stress and systemic inflammatory responses. Acetylglycine provides a source of glycine, which is known to protect renal tubular epithelial cells from hypoxic and ischemic injury by stabilizing cell membranes and preventing the opening of non-specific membrane pores. The drug is typically administered via intravenous infusion.
