Overview

Acetyllevocarnitine hydrochloride (ALC) is a small molecule carnitine derivative developed by Haisco Pharmaceutical Group for the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). It functions by participating in mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism and modulating the activity of nerve growth factors and neurotransmitters within the nervous system. These mechanisms promote nerve regeneration and provide neuroprotection, specifically targeting symptoms such as paresthesia. In a Phase 3 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted in China, oral administration of ALC at 1,500 mg/day for 24 weeks significantly improved the modified Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score (mTCNS) in patients with type 2 diabetes and DPN compared to placebo.
