Overview

ACHIM (Anaerobic Cultivated Human Intestinal Microbiome) is a standardized, single-donor live biotherapeutic product consisting of cultivated intestinal bacteria derived from human microbiota. Developed and investigated by Oslo University Hospital, it is intended to treat gastrointestinal symptoms, such as bloating and diarrhea, in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). The product is administered via endoscopic infusion (gastroduodenoscopy) into the small intestine. Its mechanism of action involves the restoration or modification of the patient's gut microbiome composition to alleviate dysbiosis-related symptoms and possibly influence immune networks. In the Phase 2 ReSScue trial, ACHIM was found to be well-tolerated but did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in lower gastrointestinal symptoms compared to placebo.
