Achyrocline satureioides is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family native to South America and widely known as "macela" or "marcela". It is used extensively in traditional medicine across Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay for treating gastrointestinal disorders and mild viral respiratory infections. The plant contains a range of bioactive compounds including flavonoids (notably quercetin, luteolin, 3-O-methylquercetin), phenolic acids, terpenoids (in essential oils), coumarins and phloroglucinol derivatives. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic, sedative/relaxant effects as well as antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus and Western equine encephalitis virus. Preclinical research suggests antioxidant neuroprotective effects along with potential anticancer properties through inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis. Extracts are also being developed into various phytopharmaceutical forms such as powders and nanoemulsions[1][5][6][8].
