Overview
Aciclovir (also known as acyclovir) is an antiviral medication primarily used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, including herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV). It is indicated for the treatment of genital herpes (both initial and recurrent episodes), cold sores (herpes labialis), shingles (herpes zoster), chickenpox (varicella), neonatal herpes simplex infection, and herpes simplex encephalitis. Aciclovir may also be used prophylactically in immunocompromised patients to prevent HSV or VZV reactivation. The drug acts as a synthetic nucleoside analogue that inhibits viral DNA polymerase after being phosphorylated by viral thymidine kinase. This action blocks viral DNA replication without affecting normal cellular processes[1][2][5][7]. Aciclovir was originally developed by GlaxoSmithKline.
