Overview
Acidex is an over-the-counter oral liquid suspension developed and marketed by AFT Pharmaceuticals, primarily in New Zealand and Australia, for the treatment of heartburn, acid indigestion, and gastroesophageal reflux. It is a combination formulation typically consisting of sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate. The drug employs a dual mechanism of action: the sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a physical, pH-neutral alginic acid 'raft' that floats on top of the stomach contents to prevent reflux into the esophagus, while the bicarbonate and carbonate salts neutralize excess stomach acid to provide rapid relief from pain and discomfort.
