Acidified aliphatic ester (AAE) is a topical therapeutic agent produced through the ozonation of aliphatic esters, typically derived from vegetable oils such as olive oil. This process creates stable ozonides that, upon contact with the skin or mucosa, release active oxygen to provide potent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and pro-regenerative effects. Developed primarily by the Italian company Erbagil under the brand name Ozoile, it is utilized to treat a variety of dermatological and mucosal conditions, including dermatitis, chronic wounds, and axillary osmidrosis. Its mechanism involves the disruption of microbial cell walls and the modulation of inflammatory pathways, such as the functional inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, offering a therapeutic alternative to topical steroids and traditional antibiotics.
