Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Acinetobacter baumannii bacteriophage refers to bacteriophages (bacterial viruses) that specifically target and lyse the Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen *Acinetobacter baumannii*. These phages are being developed as a therapeutic platform (phage therapy) to combat multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and carbapenem-resistant *A. baumannii* (CRAB) infections, which are major causes of hospital-acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections, wound infections, and sepsis. The phages bind to specific receptors on the bacterial surface (such as capsular polysaccharides, outer membrane proteins like CarO, or lipooligosaccharides), inject their double-stranded DNA genome, replicate within the host cell, and lyse the bacterium using phage-encoded endolysins and holins. In addition to direct bactericidal activity, *A. baumannii* phages can disrupt biofilms via depolymerases and modulate host immune responses, such as activating NF-κB signaling and inducing cytokine and antimicrobial protein expression (e.g., lipocalin-2 and IL-22) in lung tissue.
