Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Acipimox is a niacin derivative used as a hypolipidemic agent that inhibits lipolysis, reducing plasma free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations. When combined with insulin, this combination has been studied for its effects on insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and β-cell function. Acipimox significantly lowers serum triglyceride levels and, when used with insulin, can improve insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, predominantly affecting glycogen formation. Short-term acipimox treatment appears to improve insulin sensitivity, while long-term treatment may induce insulin resistance.
