Overview

Acmella oleracea extract, derived from the jambu or toothache plant, is a botanical medicinal and cosmetic ingredient characterized by its high concentration of N-alkylamides, specifically spilanthol. It exhibits potent local anesthetic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and myorelaxant properties. In the dental field, it is used to treat dentin hypersensitivity, aphthous stomatitis, and pain associated with tooth bleaching. In dermatology and cosmetics, it is frequently marketed as a "natural Botox" alternative due to its ability to induce muscle relaxation, which reduces the appearance of facial expression lines and wrinkles. Mechanistically, it acts as a partial agonist of the TRPV1 receptor and an agonist of the CB2 receptor, and it also demonstrates neuro-relaxing activity by modulating acetylcholine-mediated pathways at the neuromuscular junction.
