The acne mRNA vaccine is a first-in-class investigational therapeutic mRNA-based vaccine designed to treat moderate to severe acne vulgaris. It targets antigens from pathogenic strains of *Cutibacterium acnes* (C. acnes), the bacterium implicated in the development of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions in clinical disease. The mechanism involves encoding specific C. acnes antigens via messenger RNA, delivered intramuscularly, to elicit an immune response that neutralizes pathogenic bacterial factors while sparing commensal skin flora. This approach aims for a more precise and less disruptive treatment than current therapies by reducing inflammation and lesion count without broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects[2][8]. The candidate is currently being developed by Sanofi Pasteur following its acquisition of Origimm Bio GmbH, which initially pioneered the antigen discovery platform[6][8]. The product is in Phase 1/2 clinical trials for adults with moderate to severe acne[1][5][8].
