Overview

Aconite refers to plants in the Aconitum genus (particularly Aconitum napellus, Aconitum carmichaelii, and Aconitum kusnezoffii) that contain highly toxic alkaloids, especially aconitine. These alkaloids bind to voltage-sensitive sodium channels, preventing their deactivation and interfering with neurotransmitter release and electrical activity regulation. Despite its extreme toxicity, aconite has been used in traditional medicine systems for analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and cardiotonic effects. In traditional medicine, particularly Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), processed aconite has been used for analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antirheumatic purposes. However, its use is not recommended for any indication in modern medicine due to its extreme toxicity. Even small amounts of pure aconite (as little as 2 mg) can be fatal.
