Acrylic resin bone cement is a medical-grade polymeric material primarily composed of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). It is widely used in orthopedic and trauma surgery to anchor prosthetic implants to living bone by filling the space between the implant and the host tissue. The material hardens in situ through an exothermic polymerization reaction, providing mechanical stability for joint replacements such as hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow prostheses. Acrylic resin bone cements are also employed in minimally invasive procedures like vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty to stabilize vertebral compression fractures. Additionally, they can serve as carriers for local antibiotic delivery at surgical sites. While highly effective for fixation and load transfer within the bone-cement-prosthesis complex, their use may be associated with complications such as hypotension during application (bone cement implantation syndrome), local tissue irritation from monomer vapors during mixing, or rare cardiovascular events[1][2][4][5][7].
