ACT-03 is a first-in-class small molecule selective inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases, specifically MMP-9 and MMP-2 (gelatinases), being developed by Accure Therapeutics. Originally sourced from the Spanish R&D company Iproteos (as IPR-179), ACT-03 is a brain-penetrant, injectable therapeutic designed to treat epilepsy, with a particular focus on post-traumatic epilepsy. The drug operates by modulating neuroplasticity and neuroinflammation at the extracellular matrix level, targeting the tissue remodeling that occurs following brain injury. Preclinical studies have shown that ACT-03 can slow disease progression, reduce seizure severity, attenuate inflammation (reducing astrogliosis and microgliosis), and preserve blood-brain barrier integrity.
