Overview

aCT1 is a synthetic peptide fragment derived from the carboxyl-terminal region of connexin 43 (Cx43), developed as a topical and ophthalmic therapeutic. It functions primarily as an inhibitor of connexin 43 and modulates zonula occludens proteins to regulate intercellular communication and enhance tissue repair. The drug is being investigated for its ability to accelerate wound healing and reduce scarring in various skin and eye disorders. Developed by Xequel Bio (formerly FirstString Research) in collaboration with the Medical University of South Carolina, aCT1 has reached phase III clinical trials for diabetic foot ulcers, leg ulcers, radiation injuries, and scars; phase II/III for radiodermatitis; phase II for burns and corneal injuries; phase I for other eye disorders; with preclinical studies ongoing in acute lung injury and adult respiratory distress syndrome[2][1].
