Overview

Acteoside (also known as verbascoside) is a phenylethanoid glycoside widely distributed in the plant kingdom, notably in species such as *Verbascum sinuatum* and *Cistanche tubulosa*. It is characterized by its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Mechanistically, acteoside acts by scavenging free radicals, inhibiting the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, and inducing the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant response. It has also been shown to inhibit protein kinase C (PKC) and 5-lipoxygenase. Due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and reduce amyloid-beta aggregation and tau hyperphosphorylation in preclinical models, it is a subject of significant interest for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Additionally, it exhibits hepatoprotective and anti-tumor activities in various experimental settings.
