Overview

Actiparin is a pharmaceutical-grade unfractionated heparin sodium derived from bovine intestinal mucosa. It is developed and manufactured by Laboratório Bergamo (an Amneal Pharmaceuticals company) and serves as an anticoagulant. The drug is primarily indicated for patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass, where it is used to maintain hemostasis and prevent the formation of thrombi. Actiparin functions by binding to and accelerating the activity of antithrombin III, which in turn inactivates several proteases in the coagulation cascade, most significantly thrombin and Factor Xa. As a bovine-derived product, it offers an alternative to the more common porcine-derived heparins, which is significant for clinical settings in regions where bovine sources are standard or for patients with specific religious or cultural requirements.
