Overview

ToxiBan is a veterinary gastrointestinal decontaminant used to treat acute poisoning and toxin ingestion in animals. It is a combination formulation containing activated charcoal and kaolin. Activated charcoal (specifically the MedChar brand used by the developer) acts as a highly effective, non-specific adsorbent with a large surface area that binds to a wide range of toxins, chemicals, and drugs within the digestive tract, thereby preventing their absorption into the systemic circulation. Kaolin serves as a secondary adsorbent and provides a protective coating to the intestinal mucosa. ToxiBan is available in several forms, including a suspension and granules, and is commonly used in dogs, cats, and livestock. Some specific versions, such as ToxiBan Suspension with Sorbitol, also include sorbitol to act as a cathartic, facilitating the rapid transit and fecal excretion of the charcoal-toxin complex.
