Overview

Actovegin is a deproteinized hemoderivate of calf blood produced through ultrafiltration, containing a complex mixture of low-molecular-weight components such as amino acids, oligopeptides, and nucleosides. Developed by Takeda (following the acquisition of Nycomed), it is primarily indicated for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), stroke, and cognitive impairment. The drug's mechanism of action is centered on its anti-hypoxic and metabolic-enhancing properties; it stimulates oxygen uptake and utilization while promoting glucose transport and oxidation, thereby improving cellular energy metabolism in tissues affected by ischemia or hypoxia. In patients with PAD, Actovegin is used to increase pain-free walking distance and improve overall functional capacity.
