ACU-026-001-1 is an experimental lipid nanoparticle (LNP) adjuvant developed for use in vaccine studies, specifically as part of HIV vaccine research. It contains four different lipid molecules and is designed to stimulate the immune system by enhancing the response to mRNA-based vaccines. The LNP formulation is similar to that used in the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines, serving as a delivery vehicle for mRNA instructions that prompt cells to produce specific antigens—in this case, related to HIV—thereby inducing an immune response. The adjuvant was developed by Acuitas Therapeutics and supplied by Duke University for clinical trials sponsored by the Division of AIDS (DAIDS) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Its primary role is not as a therapeutic drug but as a component intended to boost immunogenicity in investigational vaccines[2].
