Overview

Acylated ceftazidime refers to the covalently bound (acyl-enzyme) form of the third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, ceftazidime. Ceftazidime is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic used primarily for serious Gram-negative bacterial infections. Its mechanism of action involves binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), especially PBP3 in Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This inhibition disrupts the final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis (peptidoglycan cross-linking), leading to cell lysis and death[1][5][8]. The "acylated" form specifically describes the intermediate state where the drug has formed a covalent bond with its target enzyme during inhibition[2][5]. Ceftazidime is notable for its stability against many beta-lactamases due to its unique side chain modifications[6].
